According to one legend, the town is named after Amalfi, a nymph loved by Hercules who was buried here at the behest of the gods. Certainly inhabited by the Romans, who had fled to the Lattari Mountains to escape Germanic and Lombard invasions, it was a castrum for the defense of the Byzantine Duchy of Naples.
